Kadıköy Market

Kadıköy, across the Bosphorus on the Asian side, hosts one of Istanbul's biggest and most beloved weekly markets every Tuesday — a sprawling produce, fish, cheese, olive, and textile market that fills the streets around the Haydarpaşa Station area. On a Tuesday morning, the whole neighborhood is in motion: stalls of greens, fruit, hand-loomed cheeses, smoked fish, dried peppers, fresh-baked bread, plus a parallel textile and clothing market. Tourists and locals mingle without friction.

Outside of Tuesday, the permanent covered market (Kadıköy Pazarı) is open daily with a smaller but still impressive array of produce, fish, and Turkish specialties. The fish hall is particularly worth a stop — the Aegean and Black Sea catch comes in fresh every morning, and you can take a kilo of sea bass, branzino, or bonito to a nearby restaurant to cook for you.

Kadıköy itself is a neighborhood worth spending a day in. It's the Asian-side equivalent of Beyoğlu — artsy, less touristy, with a strong café culture, street food (try the famous Ali Usta İskender), and a much more residential feel than the European side. The ferry ride from Eminönü or Karaköy across the Bosphorus is itself a small great moment.
