Pierre Loti Hill

Pierre Loti Hill (Piyer Loti Tepesi) is the classic Golden Horn viewpoint — a small hilltop above the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, named after the French naval officer and novelist Pierre Loti (pen name of Julien Viaud), who visited Istanbul repeatedly in the late 1800s and set part of his novel "Aziyadé" here. He used to sit in the hilltop café (now named after him) and drink Turkish coffee while watching the sun set over the Golden Horn.

The viewpoint itself is free. The famous Pierre Loti Kahvesi (Pierre Loti Café) sits at the top — order a Turkish coffee and a glass of tea, and you have the iconic Istanbul experience. The terrace view is most beautiful at sunset, when the Golden Horn turns orange and the Süleymaniye lights up across the water.

There are two ways up: the cable car (TF2 Eyüp–Piyer Loti teleferik, ~3 minutes, paid via Istanbulkart) and the walking path through the Eyüp Cemetery (~15 minutes uphill, free). Walking through the Ottoman cemetery is itself worth the experience — the carved headstones, the cypress trees, the views.

The hill is technically in the Eyüp district, well outside central Istanbul. Best combined with a visit to the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, which is at the foot of the hill.

Free to enter the viewpoint; café pays for itself with drinks. Cable car ~5 EUR.
